The new Grand Banks 62 to make global debut at the palm beach international boat show
The latest model from the esteemed builder represents a new era in luxury long-range cruising.
What does it take to consistently design, build, and deliver luxury yachts that lead a new era of long-range cruising? It requires a fleet of yachts that reflect an unwavering philosophy that perfection is achievable, showing that there are no shortcuts. It takes a visionary, a shipwright, a fierce competitor, and a passionate yachtsman. It requires patience and an acute focus on core performance principles that others can't match. In a word, it requires the leadership and vision of Mark Richards.
Richards, a world-renowned ocean racer and shipwright, has transformed Grand Banks into a cutting-edge builder and continues to redefine long-range cruising by leading the way with products that combine speed and range. Now, with the launch of the new Grand Banks 62 at the Palm Beach International Boat Show in Florida, March 19-23, 2025, Richards further solidifies the company’s nearly 70-year legacy as an industry leader and innovator.
“There is simply no other long-range cruising design on the water like the new Grand Banks 62,” says Richards. “I remember working on GB42s as a kid. Decades later, I take this stewardship of the company very seriously. The principles you’ll see in the Grand Banks 62 define the entire 60 series and our whole range: less weight, more strength, less fuel burn, more range, more speed, less resistance—leading to increased efficiency and lower emissions. I challenge anyone to compare the numbers, take our boat for a sea trial, and compare it to a similar-size trawler-yacht or motor yacht—you’ll realize there’s simply no comparison. The numbers tell the whole story, and you just need to look at her wake at any speed.”
Based on initial sea trials at launch, the Grand Banks 62 achieves a top speed of 30 knots, with a cruising speed of 27 knots. If owners’ adventures take them farther, at 20 knots, the total fuel burn is 38 gallons per hour—an unmatched performance for this class of boat. A range of 2,000 nautical miles with a 10-percent reserve is achievable at 10 knots.
These speeds are achieved at a nearly identical running angle throughout the speed curve, providing the capability for ocean-crossing range without floundering in troughs at displacement speeds. Adjusting speed and trim based on sea state enhances onboard comfort and, above all, safety.
Twin Volvo D13s, rated at 900 horsepower each on straight shafts, with Twin Disc MGX 5096A marine transmissions, come as standard. Optional engine packages include twin Volvo D13s with shaft drives rated at 1,000 horsepower each or Volvo IPS 1200S, rated at 900 horsepower each.
“Our buyers value our philosophy that speed, range, and efficiency are not mutually exclusive,” says Richards. “My stewardship of Grand Banks, which began over 11 years ago, didn’t start with asking how we could keep doing everything the same as others. Instead, the mission was to find how we could lead the way with groundbreaking designs for a new era of long-range cruising.”
Mark Richards' extensive experience led to the development of the company’s V-Warp® Technology, the cornerstone of the new Grand Banks 62 and all Grand Banks models since 2016. This groundbreaking design and engineering process combines hull form, exotic construction materials, and the build process itself. V-Warp® Technology features a knife-like entry at the bow, graceful curvature amidships, and minimal deadrise at the transom. While other designs waste energy pushing water, Grand Banks boats slice through the seas effortlessly, consuming up to 70 percent less fuel.
Like all Grand Banks models, the Grand Banks 62 is built with a precise ratio of resin to E-Glass, unidirectional, and multi-axial fiber. This results in a strong, fast, and efficient hull. The hull is fused directly to the carbon fiber structure, bulkheads, deck, and superstructure of the Grand Banks 62, contributing to the boat’s superior fuel efficiency, strength, and performance. The model is available as a Flybridge or Skylounge.
The new Grand Banks 62 at the Palm Beach International Boat Show builds upon the success of the hugely popular Grand Banks 60. The key difference between the two models is that the 62 features additional interior volume, including an enlarged starboard guest stateroom with an athwartships double bed and a single berth, as well as a utility area with a standard washer/dryer. With the added length, Grand Banks has included an en suite head for the starboard guest cabin, creating a luxurious three-stateroom, three-head layout for optimal cruising comfort.
The amidships master stateroom is designed for ultimate liveaboard comfort, with a king-size bed, en suite head with a large shower, ample storage, and natural light and fresh breezes from ports and an overhead hatch. Forward, the VIP stateroom offers a queen berth and dedicated head.
On the main deck, large windows flood the saloon, helm area, and aft galley with natural light, some of which open to allow natural ventilation. The line of sight from the lower helm and the companion seat to port makes it easy to handle the vessel in inclement weather or during night passages. As with all Grand Banks models, the GB62 showcases the company’s hallmark craftsmanship, now enhanced with even greater sophistication and elegance.
